您知道當我們切一片蘋果放置在空氣中,蘋果會變棕色,如果擠一些檸檬汁上去,變色的速度會變慢,這就是最簡單氧化及抗氧化反應的示範。邁入高齡化的社會,失智症的預防及照護是目前及未來醫療無從躲避的領域,最新發表的研究再度證實減少氧化壓力,保護甚至是提高粒線體功能是失智症的剋星。一項由美國喬治亞大學藥學系的研究發現,抗氧化物質能夠延緩失智症的發病時間,包含認知功能退化。


研究人員針對粒腺體的作用機轉,調配能夠保護粒腺體的抗氧化複合處方,名為MitoQ給那些基因設計成會發病成失智症的老鼠,結果發現可以有效提升記憶力,這項研究於2011年11月2日發表於神經科學期刊上。


研究人員利用基因工程技術,將帶有三個家族性阿茲海默症基因的老鼠分成實驗及對照兩組,利用老鼠動物實驗常用的 Morris Water Maze(莫里斯‧華特迷宮)試驗老鼠的記憶力,研究觀察發現每天喝MitoQ的老鼠表現比那些沒喝的老鼠表現高出甚多,更重要的這些喝MitoQ的老鼠,也測不出有氧化壓力、類澱粉蛋白(amyloid)負擔、神經細胞死亡或者是間隙流失這些阿斯海默症經常出現的臨床現象,相關研究請參閱:
